When Samichlaus comes
Around 6 December, Samichlaus, the Swiss St Nicholas, visits families, playgroups and kindergartens together with his companion Schmutzli. The children recite a little rhyme, a Värsli, and out of the sack come gingerbread and sometimes a small surprise to play with afterwards.
What fits in a Chlaussäckli, the little St Nicholas bag
A finger puppet or a soft baby hand puppet from The Puppet Company fits comfortably in a Chlaussäckli. For a family with several children, farm animal finger puppets work well: each child gets a different animal, and together they have a little farm.
Samichlaus, Schmutzli and the donkey
Children love to act out the visit: one child plays Samichlaus, another plays Schmutzli, and a third leads the donkey that carries the sack. At the end, that child has the donkey recite a Värsli that gets stuck halfway through.
Something for the whole group
When Samichlaus visits the kindergarten, there can be a finger puppet in the sack for every child. As the presents are unwrapped at circle time, each child tells the others which animal they have got and where it lives.
