The unicorn of the sea comes ashore: the Folkmanis narwhal hand puppet carries the spiral tusk and mottled skin of the Arctic whale. Animate the mouth and the fluke, and the figure swims a long, slow arc across the room.
The narwhal (Monodon monoceros) stays in Arctic waters all year, off Greenland, Canada, Svalbard and Siberia. Through the winter it lives beneath solid pack ice and breathes at narrow cracks and holes in the surface. Hunting Greenland halibut, squid and shrimp takes it more than a thousand metres down, with dives lasting up to twenty-five minutes. Narwhals travel in groups ranging from a handful of animals to several hundred. Only the males grow the famous tusk: the left canine tooth pushes through the upper lip and spirals anticlockwise to a length of two metres and more.
Did you know the narwhal has no dorsal fin? A low ridge sits in its place instead. An animal that spends its life under pack ice slips more easily through narrow gaps without one, and loses less body heat to freezing water.
