The domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) descends from the wild boar and has shared our farms for thousands of years. Its snout ends in a cartilage-stiffened disc that ploughs through soil in search of roots, tubers and acorns. The nose leads the way, carrying even more scent receptors than a dog’s. Sweat glands are almost absent from the skin, so pigs cool themselves in mud and shallow water. Within a group they recognise each other by voice and scent and keep to settled resting places.
Did you know that pigs know how to use a mirror? In trials they located food visible only as a reflection, turning away from the image towards the real bowl. They will also steer a cursor across a screen, nudging a joystick with the snout until it reaches the target.
