A true dog lover's dog, the Folkmanis German Shepherd puppy hand puppet is eager to please. A perfect pet for playtime or cuddles, this pooch has a movable mouth and forelegs that bring him to life with your imagination.
The German Shepherd (Canis lupus familiaris) descends from herding dogs that moved flocks along fields and roads in the nineteenth century. In 1899 Max von Stephanitz gathered those local types into a single breed and set the pattern for the dogs we know. Typical marks are the dense double coat, the upright ears and a far-reaching trot that carries the dog for hours. Puppies still have soft ear tips that flop over; they only stand up around the change of teeth. A grown male stands about 65 centimetres at the shoulder and weighs up to 40 kilograms.
Did you know that a German Shepherd's nose holds around 200 million scent cells? A human manages roughly five million. That is why the breed still works in avalanche and rubble searches, tracing people buried under snow and concrete.
