The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the most widely distributed carnivore on Earth, found across the entire Northern Hemisphere — from Arctic tundra to desert fringes. With a head-to-body length of 60 to 75 centimetres and a weight of five to eight kilogrammes, it ranks among the medium-sized predators. Foxes are omnivores and extremely adaptable: mice, earthworms, berries and rubbish all feature in their diet. In cities they have learnt to open bins and steal cat food. Foxes are mainly active at dusk and during the night and live as solitary animals with fixed territories.

Did you know that foxes use the Earth's magnetic field when hunting? Researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen discovered that foxes preferentially pounce in a north-easterly direction when catching mice. This "magnetic compass" helps them gauge the distance to prey hidden under snow or in tall grass — boosting their success rate to over 70 per cent.
