The Seppel: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Seppel hand puppet wears a green hat, a red and white checked shirt and brown lederhosen with braces; under the hat sits a face full of freckles. As with every figure in the ART series, the soft fabric head is embroidered, shaped and painted by hand, so every Seppel grins a little differently. The light hand puppet fits children's and adults' hands alike and is made in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.
Seppel is Kasper's friend and his counterpart at once. Where Kasper charges ahead, he hesitates; where Kasper fibs, he tells the truth. As the companion he turns to the audience and asks whether Kasper should really do what he is about to do. His name comes from the south: Seppel is the southern German and Austrian short form of Josef. The character has appeared as Kasper's companion since the 1920s, and puppeteers gradually dressed him in the costume of their own region.
Did you know that Seppel's lederhosen started out as working clothes? Farmers, woodcutters and hunters in the Alps wore them in the eighteenth century because leather stood up to hard work far longer than woven cloth. They only became festive costume after the teacher Josef Vogl founded Bavaria's first folk costume society in Bayrischzell in 1883; as working trousers the short lederhosen had all but disappeared by then. On the puppet stage the lederhosen became his best-known garment, and they still mark Seppel out as the lad from the countryside.
