The King: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The King hand puppet wears a crown and a medallion with his blue robe, plus a grey beard. Like every figure in the ART series he has a soft fabric head that is embroidered, shaped and painted entirely by hand, so no two kings look alike. The lightweight hand puppet suits children's and adults' hands equally well and is made in a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.
The king names the prize: whoever brings back the princess, drives off the dragon or catches the robber may claim it. That opens the story, and at the end he closes it again by passing judgement and handing over what he promised. In between he keeps out of the way, because his power lies in words rather than deeds. For the performer that means above all a calm, deep voice and a touch of dignity.
Did you know that half the kingdom as a reward comes from folk tales? In the Brothers Grimm's The Brave Little Tailor, the king promises his daughter and half his realm to whoever kills the two giants. Puppet theatre borrowed the promise because a prize on offer sets every story in motion: once the king has spoken, the hero has a reason to set out.
