At bedtime, on a train or on a picnic rug, a story needs only one small character: the Folkmanis mini toad finger puppet lets you hop into a new role anywhere. Its three-finger design works the mouth and forelegs, which makes this toad remarkably talkative.
Toads begin life as tadpoles in water, breathing through gills, propelled by a paddle-like tail and entirely legless. Within a few weeks the hind legs appear, then the front pair, the tail is absorbed and the young animal moves onto land. Behind the eyes sit two swollen glands that release a bitter, mildly toxic secretion when the toad is harassed. Earth-brown, warty skin makes a resting toad all but vanish against leaf litter or damp soil. Winter is spent motionless in a burrow, under tree roots or inside a compost heap.
Did you know that toads return each spring to the very water in which they hatched? Some travel several kilometres to get there and cross roads on the way. That is why conservation groups put up toad fencing in March and carry the animals across by the bucketful.
