Dog lovers will delight in the long and lean Folkmanis Dachshund hand puppet. With its signature stretched-out body, sleek, smooth coat, a movable mouth and movable forepaws, it feels lively in every movement. That runs from the swish of its tail to the playful tilt of its head. This pup is built to wiggle into your heart.
The dachshund, called Teckel in the language of German hunters, was bred in Germany for hunting underground. On short legs and with a stretched body it follows fox and badger right into the den. The Deutscher Teckelklub has looked after the breed since 1888. It comes in three coats: smooth-haired, wire-haired and long-haired. The three sizes are defined not by weight but by chest girth, measured at 15 months at the earliest. In females the standard size measures above 35 centimetres, the miniature above 30 to 35 and the rabbit dachshund 25 to 30, with males a good two centimetres larger in each class. The short legs come from a naturally arisen gene copy that slows bone growth in the limbs early on; breeders then selected for it deliberately.
Did you know that a dachshund was the first official Olympic mascot? For the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, the brightly striped Waldi came out of Otl Aicher's design team. Even the marathon route ran through the city in the shape of a dachshund.
