The dark facial mask, the dense grey fur and the ringed tail make the raccoon soft toy by Anima recognisable at a glance. The fur is soft, the body plumply filled and yielding, so the figure moves with you when you hug it. Children take the masked woodland creature onto the sofa, into bed and away on holiday — its roguish look invites them to blame it for mischief and build whole stories around it. In nurseries and primary schools the plush toy becomes the lead character whenever newly settled species come up, as few animals have spread across Germany so quickly. Anima has been making plush animals in France since 1946, and the figures meet the European EN71 safety standard.

The raccoon has a sitting height of approximately 26 cm. The tail measures approximately 15 cm when measured separately.

The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is active at dusk and by night, preferring to sleep the day away in the tree hollows of old oaks, or else in badger setts, quarries and dense scrub. In cold regions it keeps a winter rest, sharply reducing its activity without truly hibernating. After around 65 days of gestation a female bears three young on average; they open their eyes only after two to three weeks and leave the den at six to nine weeks. Females live in loose associations, while unrelated males form coalitions.

Did you know that raccoons are among the few animals of their size that can climb down a tree trunk head first? They rotate their hind paws far enough for the claws to point backwards and grip the bark. Their hearing reaches frequencies around 85 kilohertz — enough to locate an earthworm below the soil. Among themselves they communicate with at least thirteen calls, seven of them between mother and young, including the bird-like chirping of newborns.
