Hansa Creation — plush toys with a commitment to nature
Hansa Creation has been producing plush animals modelled on real species since 1972. Founder Hans Axthelm wanted to show animals as they truly look — with accurate proportions, species-specific markings and postures drawn from nature. Production takes place in the Philippines, where artisans make each animal individually. The current range covers more than 7,000 species.
Sustainability built in
Hansa Creation has shifted its production step by step. Collected rainwater has been used since 1994. In 2011 came the next move: since then, the filling in every animal has been made entirely from recycled PET bottle fibres. This keeps plastic bottles out of the environment and reduces raw material consumption. The synthetic furs used for the outer shell are developed specifically for each species and tested for harmful substances. All products carry the EN 71 mark for toy safety in Europe.
Made by hand
For each soft toy, a cutting pattern is first developed using photographs of the animal in its natural habitat. Skilled workers then cut the fabric pieces individually — around 42 per animal on average. Sewing follows the inside-out method, with all seams facing inward. The result is a smooth surface with no rough edges. Airbrush artists then add colour gradients and patterns. Eyes, claws and whiskers are chosen from a stock of over 6,000 different components and attached by hand.
Therapeutic and educational use
Occupational therapists and speech therapists frequently work with objects that help start conversations. A realistically designed animal is particularly well suited — it sparks curiosity without overwhelming. Children with delayed speech development often find it easier to name body parts on a soft toy than on pictures. In dementia care, residents readily reach for soft, familiar shapes. A rabbit, a cat or a dog can trigger memories of former pets or time spent in nature, opening a path into conversation.
In nurseries and schools, the animals are used in science and nature lessons. Because Hansa Creation works anatomically, children can genuinely compare features of different species on the toys: fur or feathers? Paws or hooves? Webbed feet or claws?
Collector value and gift ideas
Since every Hansa animal is made by hand, no two pieces are completely alike. Collectors build entire groups over time — perhaps the inhabitants of a particular continent or all native woodland species. As gifts, the animals appeal to children and adults equally, because they stand clearly apart from ordinary stuffed toys.
Cleaning and care
A soft cloth with lukewarm water and a little soap is enough for surface cleaning. Allow to dry, then brush the fur gently if needed. Machine washing is not advisable, as the airbrushed paintwork and the toy's shape may be damaged.
