The Magician: a Punch and Judy hand puppet from munabo's ART series. The Magician hand puppet wears a tall black pointed hat with a purple robe; a dark moustache and stern eyebrows give him his grim look. Because the soft fabric head is embroidered, shaped and painted entirely by hand, the brows sit a little differently on every magician. The light figure, made for children's and adults' hands alike, comes from a traditional craft workshop in the Czech Republic.
The magician brings the magic word into the play, and the magic word brings in the children. As soon as the spell is spoken the audience repeats it, and when the counter-spell is needed everyone shouts along. Few characters invite this much participation: a transformed princess, a vanished treasure or a bewitched Kasper all pose problems that courage cannot solve. Only the right word can. Whether the magician ends the play as a villain or as a helper is for the performer to decide, play by play.
Did you know that Doctor Faustus too made his way across the puppet stage as a wizard? Travelling marionette players were performing the tale of the pact with the devil in Germany by the eighteenth century. The first documented performance of the Faust puppet play took place in Hamburg in 1746. In Bohemia the puppeteer Matěj Kopecký had it in his repertoire. Goethe saw such a performance as a boy in Frankfurt and, in his autobiography, calls the Faust puppet play an early spark for his own work.
