The large species stand well over one and a half metres when upright and can weigh up to 90 kilograms. They graze on grasses and herbs and travel in loose groups known as mobs. When hopping, the tendons in the hind legs work like springs, so a kangaroo needs barely more energy at speed than at a walk. Standing still, the heavy tail props up the whole body, and at walking pace it pushes the animal forward like a fifth leg.
Did you know that a newborn kangaroo is hardly bigger than a bean? After around a month of gestation it arrives blind, with hind legs still unfinished, and climbs through its mother's fur to the pouch unaided. There it attaches to one teat while a neighbouring teat feeds an older sibling at the same time, with milk of an entirely different composition.
